Derryduff P.H.E.S.
Organic Power is preparing a planning application for a proposed 154.3MWhr per 3.43 hour cycle, 45MW rated turbine capacity, Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage Scheme project to be located at Derryduff and Cappanabrick townlands, Coomhola, Bantry, Co. Cork. All of the input electric power will be sourced from grid connected wind energy projects. The process will transform unpredictable and variable windpower to reliable, dispatchable clean energy delivered to the grid.
The project will eliminate the emission of 91,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent annually, the main cause of global warming. This corresponds to 9.1% of the current target of a reduction of 1 million tonnes CO2 equivalent to be provided solely by renewable energy by the year 2010. The equivalent of one full time job will be created locally and 1.5 full time positions indirectly. Rent will be paid to local landowners and €50,000 per year will be made available for community projects for the first five years of operation. Over the 50 year lifetime of the project, the net local benefits are over €10,000,000. The projected net national economic benefits over 50 years will be €1,541,000,000.
The proposed development is on balance overwhelmingly positive in its impacts. It has been designed on the basis of exhaustive baseline studies, resulting in an entirely sustainable development.
