Responsible Energy for a Sustainable Climate
"The scientific evidence is now overwhelming: climate change represents very serious global risks and it demands an urgent response. The development and deployment of a wide range of low carbon technologies is essential in achieving the deep cuts in emissions that are needed."- Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change October 2006
- Organic Power Ltd. aims to build a portfolio of dispatchable power projects using a polygeneration mix of non-polluting technologies which are both renewable and sustainable. This company’s goal is to have 125MW of dispatchable renewable energy permitted and ready for construction by the end of 2010. This capacity, when operational, will be a definitive demonstration that clean reliable energy can be produced profitably in Ireland.
- Between 2010 and 2015, Organic Power will install and operate 125MW of mixed clean generation to supply 50MW of guaranteed power to the market via Organic Power Supply Company.
The Technology of Polygeneration
The polygeneration technology mix proposed by the company includes three separate technologies:
- Wind Power
- Pumped Hydro Electrical Storage
- Combined Heat and Power (CHP) from agricultural Biomass by-products.
Following animation demonstrates a polygeneration model:
The intermittent nature of wind power is transformed into dispatchable power by storing some of the energy produced in pumped hydroelectric reservoirs, for conversion into electricity during calm weather. The biomass CHP provides additional backup when the stored hydro energy has been discharged. The mix of the three technologies provides a technical solution to provide reliable base load power from renewable non-polluting sources. This strategy will ensure that Organic Power could supply its customers from its own generation capacity without the need to buy power from other producers.
The benefits are as follows:
- Efficient use of national grid infrastructure.
- Effective replacement of fossil fuel and nuclear base load from the energy mix on the grid.
- Most efficient use of existing renewable energy sources which are available in Ireland.
- Independence from fuel imports for the provision of base load.
The company was incorporated in 2006, is based at FBD House, Mardyke Street, Skibbereen, Co. Cork, and is financed entirely by shareholders, the majority of whom are from Cork.
